Concussions represent a mild traumatic brain injury that can lead to such signs and symptoms as headache and nausea, loss of consciousness, confusion, light sensitivity, blurry or double vision, abnormalities in how the eyes work together and inability to properly focus the eyes. Reading and use of computer screens can be especially problematic for several months. Some people benefit from a temporary pair of glasses or eye exercises which can reduce symptoms.
A concussion baseline includes a vision check, and assessment of pupil reactivity, extraocular motility, focusing ability and agility, eye movements, and eye teaming. If you or your child have experienced head trauma, deviations from these baseline measurements may indicate a concussion. Return to baseline values can help inform when it is safe to return to normal activities.
